Boy Scouts and Private Principles

  1. You were doing so well for the first fifteen minutes. Though I'm glad you got back on track by the end of the episode.

    There's probably a bit more to be said about the distinction between private clubs that operate on private property and organizations (like the Boy Scouts) that often conduct their club activities in city rec centers and schools.

    There's also the harder general point of on what basis is it acceptable for businesses (or other organizations) to exclude customers or employees. At the very least, I think there's support based on common principles for prohibiting some sorts of arbitrary discrimination, even if done based on the private decisions of the owners of businesses and organizations. Americans are generally in favor of freedom of association, but also in favor of not making whole groups into second-class citizens, and formal legal discrimination is not the only way of coordinating the exclusion of groups from wide swaths of the public sphere.
